Why Sports Bras are Essential for Your Workout Wardrobe

Larger breasts will naturally bounce and stretch more than smaller breasts, which is in part why bigger busts are at increased risk of sagging. And, of course, breasts are at their bounciest during a high intensity workout. Investing in a properly fitting and secure sports bra is a great way to slow the effect of sagging over time. 

Sports bras with adequate support can also increase comfort during exercise. If you’re someone who layers multiple low compression sports bras to get the support you need, it may be time to explore more heavy duty support options. 

Choosing the Right Compression Level for Your Activity

Low support sports bras have the lightest amount of support. They typically feature thin straps and less fabric coverage. While they’re the least supportive option in the sports bra family, they do offer more support than a bralette. Pro tip: Do not wear a bralette to work out as this option will not provide the support you need. (We know they look the same, but they’re constructed very differently!)

  • Walking

Moderate support sports bras will have more surface area and generally more construction. Padding is often introduced at this level. Some medium support sports bras have adjustable straps and bands so you can increase support as needed. 

Pro tip: A lot of moderate support bras turn into low support bras for larger chested women because the moderate support bra isn’t necessarily built for a plus-size body. If you wear a D cup or larger, pay extra attention in the fitting room to make sure you’re getting the support level that’s advertised. Not all bras are created equally, so you may need to experiment to make sure that you’re getting the support level you need. 

Activities for medium support sports bras: 

  • Weight lifting
  • Golf

High support sports bras feature thicker straps and the most surface area. It’s common to see a front tension hook and front zipper to increase compression and make them easier to put on and take off. Adjustability features, like an adjustable band and straps, are also common. A good high support bra will feature a sling for larger breasted women and can even have underwire.

  • Running
  • Dancing
  • Jumping
